This week, I'm getting a little Betty Crocker on you. Lately, so many of my friends have been getting engaged. Yay for weddings! I always get asked what Seth and I registered for, since we went down this road a few years ago.
It's important to note that everyone is different and registries are diverse. They should be! Not everyone needs a mortar and pestle, for crying out loud.
If you are recently engaged or plan to be in the future, I would recommend that you start from a standard wedding registry checklist (most stores with registries provide a list or you can Google one) and narrow it down to things you need and want. Keep in mind that you do not need EVERYTHING on that standard wedding registry checklist! It's just a baseline for you to build and take away from.
For example, you may already have a set of silverware or pots and pans. Even if you already own these items, you can always upgrade and live a little more lavish like Martha Stewart. (Let's face it...there will be NO other time in your life where you are gifted new baking sheets.)
Here are the items that Seth and I have used a lot, couldn’t live without, and make our life a little easier and better.
- Pyrex Baking Dishes and Bowls with Lids
You can never go wrong with these! I love using glass, since it is safer to microwave. You can even pop these in your oven for baking and reheating (without the lid). They clean up like a charm. No nasty plastic Tupperware containers in this house! (Just kidding...we still have a drawer-full of those, and Seth refuses to put clean ones away, since they never fit. It's one of our constant debates as a married couple. I will slowly be eliminating the plastic ones for Pyrex's safer alternative.)
- White and Red Wine Glasses (Stemmed and Stemless), Pint Glasses, Champagne Flutes & Lowball Glasses
(No, I do not have a binge drinking disorder. Yes, I like to entertain.) I registered for at least 8 of all of these. The recommended amount is 8-12 pieces, but unless you have a ton of cupboard space, I would stick to 8 of each kind. The truth is, you will break one of your glasses and it's nice to have a few extra on hand.
- Cute Ice Cream Sundae Dishes & Malt Glasses
My good friend, Holly, bought a set for my wedding, and Seth and I use them a little too much. We go through phases of eating ice cream every night, and we always use our cute dishes.
- Root Beer Float Mugs
Who doesn't love a root beer float on a hot summer day? These mugs are awesome for a sweet dessert or a cold beer.
- Utensil Set
Hey, you. College called and it wants it's crappy plastic spoons back. Register for two sets, because they will get gross with time. I have a brand new set in storage that I have yet to use.
Register for one or two nice tablecloths. These are great to have on hand when you have company, and they are easy to throw in the wash and reuse for future parties.
- Serving Platters
I did not register for serving platters, but I did receive some as gifts for Christmas. You cannot go wrong with basic serving platters for parties and holidays. If they have handles, even better! I like basic white, since it matches anything and everything.
- Kitchenaid Mixer
This was one of the only items that Seth requested to be on our registry. (Whaaaat?!) I wasn't even the one who wanted it! But I am so glad that we registered for the mixer. It is AWESOME. I use it every time I bake and make mashed potatoes. Plus, it looks super cool on our counter top.
I use the blender SO much to make our breakfast smoothies and ice cream desserts. It is a must-have in the kitchen.
- Ice Bucket with Tongs
Almost every time we have guests over, we use our ice bucket. It is small, comes with a handle and easy to store.
- Breakfast-In-Bed Trays
Every morning, Seth brings me breakfast in bed using these trays. Just kidding. It has only happened on occasion! I love these trays. They can add a little romance to a Saturday morning.
- Nice Set of Silverware
Pick a durable set with a classic look. That way, they won't get outdated after a few years.
- Nice Set of Cooking Pots & Pans
I have Calphalon Non-Stick and LOVE them! They are easy to cook with and super easy to clean.
- Brand New Bed Sheets, Blankets & A Cozy Quilt
Register for new bedding as you embark on this adventure as husband and wife. It will be worth it. Register for two sets of sheets, as it is always nice to have a clean set on hand in case a dog (or child) pees in your bed one day! It has happened to us a few times...
Not everything on your registry has to be for the kitchen, bathroom or bedroom! We are big gamers (not video, but social) and we love having a variety to play when friends come over. Some of my favorites include: Bezzerwizzer, Cards Against Humanity, Telestrations (new favorite!) and Catch Phrase.
To all you current Wifeys out there...What did you register for that you absolutely love and cannot live without?
What was something you registered for that you never use?
